The Best Way to Clear Your Laptop Computer

by aileen on September 6th, 2011 at 11:36 AM

Digital Camera Batteries - Same Day Ship When getting rid of or updating an old laptop, you may wish to give it away or sell it. One thing you need to consider is how accessible the data on your computer is to the new owner. Clearing your laptop before selling or disposing of it does not take very long, but the peace of mind you receive lasts forever.

Windows

The simplest way to clear out a Windows laptop is to reformat the hard drive. To do this, you will need the Windows restore CD that came with your computer when you bought it. Insert your Windows restore CD and turn on the computer. The computer will either automatically boot from the CD or it will ask whether you wish to boot from it. Select “Yes” if you wish to boot from the CD. A menu will appear that gives you a few instructions. Different Windows systems will give you different options, but the New Installation option is present on all restore CDs. Select “New Installation.” Hit “Enter” to set up Windows. Agree to the license agreement then skip repairing the current version of Windows. Select the hard drive your information is installed on and hit “D” to delete it. Confirm the delete. Hit enter to reinstall a new version of Windows.

Mac OSX

If you wish to clear a Macintosh Computer with the OS X operating system, the best way is to zero out the hard drive using the Mac OS X install CD. Insert the install CD with the computer turned on. Turn off the computer, then restart holding down the Alt button. The Installer screen will open. Go to the top menu and choose the “Installer” option, then select “Disk Utilities.” The Disk Utility application will launch. Select the hard drive you want to erase and click the “Erase” tab. Select the volume format for the drive and click “Options.” There will be a check box that gives you the option to “Zero All Data.” Click “OK.” The hard drive will now be completely erased with a series of zeroes. This makes any data left on the drive nearly impossible to obtain. Make sure everything is backed up properly before zeroing out data.

Backup

Before erasing your hard drive, make sure to back up all of your pertinent information and software. Buy an external hard drive and hook it up to your computer. The easiest way to back up your information is to click the items you wish to copy and drag them to the hard drive. If you have applications on the computer you wish to transfer to the new computer, make sure that you have the installation CDs. Most software cannot be transferred to an external hard drive or to a new computer because of software licensing issues.
